Giveaway

Okay, here's the deal. Doing this Sketchbook thingy has just about wiped out my brain. I have sort of come to a creative dead-end, so to speak. Or maybe it's just that I'm tired, and Secret Agent Man has been out of town all week doing Secret Agent things and I'm just out of my routine. I don't know.
But whatever it is, I'm drawing a blank (pun definitely intended) as to where to go next with this. I realize I don't have to have 40 pages of art, but I'd like to have more than 14.

Anyway...here's what I'm thinking: I'm going to have a contest. Submit to me your idea for an illustration and if I like it and I pick it I will send you a numbered and signed print of the drawing. (Numbered because at some point I'm going to offer some of them as a limited edition of prints, I think.)

Please keep in mind that
1) my theme is "Submersibles and Dirigibles";
2) nothing naughty, please;
and 3) it needs to be able to fit into a 5.5 in by 8.5 in drawing space.

Um....let's see - deadline 1 week from today, so Nov 5th. How's that sound?

  1. First I had to Google what "Dirigibles" are... ahem-- When I figured that out, I pictured a turkey blimp. Maybe I'm hungry, maybe I'm craving Thanksgiving or maybe I'm just nuts, but that's what I came up with.
    Cheers, jj

  2. Yeah I remember the word dirigible from kiki's delivery service...where she had to save the boy from falling from it. You can create something like that. I also think it would be awesome to see a cute rabbit taking an adventure 10,000 leagues under the sea in a submarine

  3. I've got one! Okay, it's not a dirigible, but it is a mode of transportation: a pirate ship! If it was a GHOST pirate ship, it would FLY in the AIR like a dirigible! Right? RIGHT?!

    Do they have pirate submarines? COULD they? Hmmm ...

  4. I like the pirate air ship idea as submitted above!Ok I had a few ideas spring to mind, you could go historical and base an illo on the Hindenburg disaster,bit dark though depends on how you feel on that one :-/ I also thought about an image looking out of a submarine from the inside (I was thinking about the film Life Aquatic at that point).My fave idea though is doing something based on really old diving outfits, seriously they are insane and would make a great illustrations!

  5. I want to see the view from inside that puffer-fish submersible...with mouse at the controls, and a real Captain Nemo, steam-punk feeling inside! When you illustrate the book, I'll write the text!

  6. I see a cool shoe that floats around underwater...and there are smaller ones all around that are manned by shoe loving divas....

  8. How about birds exploring underwater in submersibles and fish exploring the skies in water-filled dirigibles?

    Or a dirigible that looks like a fish and a submersible that looks like a bird?

    A submersible finding a golden Atlantis?

    A dirigible breaking through to Heaven? Amongst angels? Or maybe something less angelic? Or both?

    I'm having fun with this.

  9. Oooh. How about something inspired by the story of Hades, Persephone, pomegranate seeds, spring and winter, etc.?

  10. Jules Verne was the first thing I thought of, there are several scenes from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that you could do. A giant squid attacking the Nautilus is probably the most famous one. Another character of his is Robur the Congueror, he had a flying fortress in one novel and in another a flying submarine/car.

  11. Dirigible with fireworks in the background.

  12. I could picture a sad little girl holding a dirigible tied to a string. she is sad because she wanted a shiny red balloon and not a drab, gray dirigible.

  13. I'm such an ass for missing this! O well. I probably couldn't have thought of anything interesting anyway.

  14. Argh. I go underground for a few days and you have a party without me. Ha! Well, congrats to the winners. Some great suggestions here. I'm kind of creatively comatose at the moment, but if I come up with any ideas, I'll throw them at ya and see if any stick. :)
